Shabbat and Holidays with Host Families

Shabbat and Holidays with Host Families

Many of you serve far from home, facing financial challenges and sometimes emotional loneliness. Precisely during a military service in which you give so much of yourselves, you need more – you need a warm home – in daily life and especially on Shabbat and holidays.

Supporting Lone Soldiers – A Shared Responsibility

Lone Soldiers are not just the army’s challenge – they are the responsibility of Israeli society as a whole. You protect all of us, and that deserves appreciation, respect, and support. Many initiatives and nonprofits provide housing, holiday packages, food for soldiers, personal mentoring, and emotional support – and at Beit Eli we are devoted to exactly these goals.

This means not just providing a place to lay your head for a night or two, but offering a true, complete, and family-like framework.

Adoptive Families for Lone Soldiers

One of Beit Eli’s initiatives is connecting Lone Soldiers with adoptive families who host them for Shabbat and holidays. In addition, at the Beit Eli home itself we host holiday meals and Shabbat gatherings, inviting soldiers to share meaningful experiences within a warm, supportive family atmosphere.

These shared celebrations create an environment of belonging and joy, enabling Lone Soldiers to experience Shabbat and holidays fully – even when far from their own homes – and to feel part of a genuine, embracing community.

For most of us, a holiday is a time of family, a full table, and moments of belonging. But for Lone Soldiers serving without close family support, this is a deep emotional need. This is where Beit Eli and Israeli families open their doors – and their hearts.

Rosh Hashanah Together

The High Holidays are approaching, and many feel the need to be surrounded by family and friends at the holiday table. For Lone Soldiers, living far from home and without close family nearby, this season can feel especially lonely.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. With us, you can celebrate Rosh Hashanah with warmth, support, and meaningful experiences – and feel the togetherness at one of the most important times of the year.

Hot Meals for Soldiers in the Field

Holiday hosting is important, but support for Lone Soldiers is critical all year round. Beit Eli also runs a Hot Meal Project for soldiers in the field, delivering fresh, nourishing food directly to them.

This is not just about food – it’s about showing soldiers that they are remembered, cared for, and appreciated, even while serving in difficult conditions. The project was launched in response to the “Iron Swords” War, ensuring no soldier is left hungry in the field.

Who We Are

Beit Eli is named after Eliyahu (Eli) Kay, a Lone Soldier from South Africa who made Aliyah out of deep love for Israel and a desire to contribute to the Jewish people and the State. Eli served in the Paratroopers, lived in a kibbutz, and dedicated his life to Zionist activity, advocacy, and helping others.

He was tragically murdered in a terrorist attack in Jerusalem on his way to work – but his spirit and vision live on. Through Beit Eli, we continue his legacy by supporting and accompanying Lone Soldiers, ensuring that each one finds belonging, a warm home, and a family – even far from the one they left behind.
